FAQs

What does “SoulWise” mean?

We view the “soul” of a person as the mind, will, and emotions of each individual. The essence of who you are that makes you uniquely “you.” In our view, a person’s “soul” encompasses the inherent value that exists in every person. It is our goal to be wise with our own souls and to provide compassionate, person-centered care for everyone who enters our office. The therapeutic process is geared towards helping you grow in wisdom as you learn to care well for yourself and begin to experience the freedom of living in line with your authentic values and personhood.

What should I expect at the first appointment?

The first appointment is called an intake. During this session, your therapist will ask you questions about your presenting symptoms, family, medical, and educational history, and goals for treatment. Gathering thorough background information as part of a clinical interview is imperative to accurately understanding your needs. After the intake appointment, your therapist will make a recommendation for next steps.

What is a psychological evaluation?

A psychological evaluation is a useful tool for clarifying diagnosis. Evaluations at our office typically consist of three sessions - the intake, test administration, and interpretation of test results. At the first appointment, your clinician will conduct a clinical interview to gather relevant details about your symptoms and history. Depending on your specific situation, a variety of research-validated psychological tests will then be administered to aid your clinician in making a diagnosis. The third appointment is designated for looking at the results together with your clinician, answering any questions you have about the diagnosis, and making treatment recommendations.

Can you test my child for Autism?

Yes. We test for Autism and other neurodevelopmental concerns using the best tests in the industry, including the ADOS-2. Families take a brave step forward when they decide to seek an evaluation to determine if their child has developmental differences. We would like to walk with you to find answers and to help develop a plan for your child’s success going forward. Our clinicians know Autism. Our goal is an accurate diagnosis, acknowledging both the areas of challenge and areas of strength in each individual child. Autism evaluations are available for children 18 months and older, adolescents, and adults.

Do you offer medication management?

No. We do not prescribe medication. However, we can provide you with a referral to a local physician if medication management is needed.

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy is appropriate for people experiencing a wide range of mental health symptoms, including anxiety, depression, chronic relationship struggles, mood swings, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and more. The goal of therapy is to alleviate the symptoms. This goal is often accomplished by looking at how dysfunctional patterns have developed in an individual over time due to family of origin issues, problematic habits and beliefs, and/or trauma. Having a judgment-free safe space to explore deep wounds is worthwhile work and can make a huge difference in your quality of life. Therapy is usually covered by most major insurance plans.

Coaching, on the other hand, is not a treatment for mental health conditions, and therefore, is not covered by insurance. It is appropriate for individuals who need clarity on specific life circumstances and need support to grow. The goal of coaching is to understand how past hang-ups are keeping you stuck…and then to help you break free.

Dr. Rowland specializes in coaching clients who are experiencing high levels of relational stress as a result of dysfunctional relationship dynamics or narcissistic abuse.
